We are delighted to report that Chris Shurety, who, with a small group of parents in Tower Hamlets founded ELLSO in 1982, has been awarded an MBE in the Queens Honours List for services to Music.

This is a well-deserved honour as Chris has worked tirelessly to provide highly valued opportunities for amateur musicians of all abilities to create and play music. Apart from his long involvement in shaping ELLSO and encouraging similar developments in Yorkshire, New York and Waveney strings in Suffolk, in 1993 he spearheaded the development of COMA (Contemporary Music for All).  COMA not only provides playing opportunities around the country, but also commissions new works and provides opportunities to develop composition skills in regular events, including a Summer School. It has grown to be a key promoter of Contemporary Music in this country. In 2009 he further developed Allcomers Music to provide further playing opportunities for amateur string players.

All of us in ELLSO owe him a tremendous debt, for his vision and energy in pursuing and sustaining our organisation. We heartily congratulate and thank him.
